Developers today are building smarter systems—automating workflows, scaling faster, and delivering more with less custom code. Whether you’re orchestrating a complex onboarding process, automating customer renewals, or embedding agreement steps into internal tools, Docusign Developer Release 1 (R1) gives you the building blocks to do it faster—and with more control.
R1 introduces new APIs, extension frameworks, and automation capabilities, with built-in AI assistance to help you streamline integrations, reduce manual steps, and accelerate time to value.
Agreements are no longer static documents—they’re active workflows that collect information, verify identity, and kick off downstream actions across your systems. With R1, developers have more flexibility to embed agreements deeper into the tools, portals, and processes that power real-world operations.
What we delivered in Developer Release 1
A closer look at the APIs, extensions, and developer tools that launched in R1.
Bring agreements into the systems you already use
Embed, sync, and surface agreement workflows directly inside your business-critical platforms.
API-based Notary On-Demand initiation Trigger notarized signing flows using third-party notary services directly from your application, perfect for use cases such as remote employee onboarding, mortgage processing, or regulated financial agreements.
Connected Fields API Programmatically discover and use custom or Docusign data models to verify and autofill envelope fields—reducing errors during onboarding, payment authorizations, and account updates.
Maestro API embeddability (beta) Embed Maestro workflows into your app with a lightweight iframe so users can complete key steps such as document uploads and signing without leaving your platform.
Workspaces API (beta) Create and manage structured, multi-step agreement workflows by embedding Workspaces into your applications—centralizing documents, participants, and permissions in one collaborative environment.
Reduce manual tasks where it matters most
Trigger real-time actions, reduce rework, and streamline handoffs across your systems.
Connected Fields extension Verify user-entered data in real time by connecting fields to your system of record—returning verified results, guidance, or autofill directly during signing.
Data IO extension Sync structured agreement data between Docusign and your system of record. This allows for automation of common flows like updating a CRM with signed order details or provisioning accounts post-signature.
Manage with flexibility, speed, and scale
Customize agreement workflows, scale securely, and accelerate development with tools built for performance, extensibility, and control.
Private extension apps (beta) Build and publish secure, organization-specific extensions. Ideal for connecting proprietary systems or tailoring agreement logic to your internal processes.
Generative AI for developers: VS Code Extension (beta) Use AI-powered guidance, built on GitHub CoPilot, inside VS Code to explore APIs, generate tokens, and test calls faster—without leaving your editor.
What’s next
We’re continuing to invest in extensibility and automation—making it easier to build end-to-end agreement workflows that plug into your core business systems. Stay tuned for Release 2 later this year, and let us know what you’re building.
